FAQ: The Outdoor Line by Peak Design
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

When will these products ship?

A quick timeline for ya: - Sep 3 - Oct 15: This Kickstarter project! - Late Oct: We’ll send out KS fulfillment surveys - Nov-Jan: Kickstarter rewards ship to backers - Late Nov: Outdoor Bags launch globally through our website, stores, dealers

In short, we expect all reward shipments to happen by the end of January 2025, and we’re very confident in that date. Furthermore, we expect reward shipments to begin going out as early as mid-November of this year. In summary, if you back this you could end up receiving your reward anytime between late November 2024 and January 2025.

Before we get into the details it’s worth noting up front that we expect these Outdoor Bags to be available to the general public beginning in late November. That means some amount of backers will see these Outdoor Bags launch on our website and in stores before they receive their rewards. We can’t guarantee you’ll get your bags before they’re available at the store down the street from you. But we CAN guarantee you’ll get an exclusive 20-25% discount on them, available only to backers of this campaign.

For those wondering why we wouldn’t prioritize Kickstarter rewards shipments to go out first, the answer has to do with manufacturing capacity, logistics and timing. Our factory can only manufacture so many bags at a time. Mass production will begin before this campaign ends, and it will continue for months afterwards to meet the demand across all of our sales channels. Logistically, Kickstarter fulfillment and wholesale fulfillment take totally different paths from the warehouse to the end customer.

The products sent to Kickstarter backers travel from our factory to one of our 6 global warehouses via boats, and then are delivered to backers via a local carrier. Products are sent to wholesale partners via bulk air shipments directly from the factory. Regarding timing, Outdoor Line fulfillment happens to be occurring right before the holiday shopping season, a time of immense importance to our dealer network. In the past we have placed artificial embargoes on dealers so they don’t begin selling products until Kickstarter rewards are fulfilled. This year we’ve decided not to do that in order to support the thousands of local businesses worldwide who sell and service our products.

If this is your first time backing a Kickstarter, note that in order to receive your products you will need to fill out our fulfillment survey. We will send that survey out after the campaign has ended, once we are ready to ship rewards…likely in mid-to-late September. In that survey we will collect your shipping address, calculate/collect sales tax or VAT, and give you an opportunity to add on additional products to your reward for an exclusive discount.

Do PD Outdoor Bags work with PD Travel Bags and Packing Tools?

They sure as heck do.

Our Travel Bags and Outdoor Bags are both designed to work with our ever-growing line of Packing Tools, including Camera Cubes, Ultralight Packing Cubes, original Packing Cubes, Tech Pouches, Wash Pouches, you name it.

How will my products ship and will I get tracking?

DOMESTIC: If you’re in the US, we’ll be shipping your package using a ground service (USPS or FedEx depending on destination and shipment size). These packages will have tracking information that will work within the US.

INTERNATIONAL: Non-US orders will ship from one of our 5 international warehouses located in the UK, Netherlands, HK, Toronto, and Australia. In order to provide a better fulfillment experience (and in some cases reduce duties that backers have to pay), Peak Design is going to be importing all of our products into these countries prior to shipping them to you. This means that your shipments:

  1. Won’t require duties to be collected on delivery in Canada, UK, EU, HK, and Australia (other countries may have applicable duties, please check with your customs office for specific details. Customers are responsible for paying local sales tax / VAT/GST, which will be calculated and charged when you fill out your fulfillment survey and enter in your shipping information.)
  2. Will arrive quickly and not get held up in customs.
  3. May have tracking, but may not guaranteed (depending on the particular post service, of which there are too many used to name).

Note that we cannot alter the value of your rewards on customs declarations - the value will be declared as the total value of the items contained in the shipment.

How do I know if the Outdoor Backpacks will fit me?

The 45L and 25L Outdoor Backpacks were designed to fit and exceptionally broad range of male and female body shapes and sizes. Specifically, they are designed to fit torso lengths from 17-20” (43-50cm) and waist sizes from 24-52” (61-132cm).

To properly measure your waist and torso for backpack fitment, this article and video from REI gives easy-to-follow directions: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacks-adjusting-fit.html

You can use your height to approximate if our bags will fit you. If you are 5’8” to 6’2” with a waist size within the aforementioned range, these bags should fit you just fine. If you are a bit outside that range (5’2” to 5’8”, or 6’2” to 6’6”) our backpacks may fit you, but there’s a chance they wont. That chance grows as you move further out of the range of certainty. So, if you’re on the cusp, it’s probably worth measuring your torso.

We rigorously tested these bags with lots of differently-sized people in real situations. In our final beta test we had two women who were 5’2” and a man who was 6’6”, all of whom said the Peak Design Outdoor Backpacks fit them perfectly. On the other hand, Joe from our video team is 6’4” and the backpacks don’t work for him because his torso is too long. Long Torso Joe, we call him.

What fits in each size of Camera Cube?

Among the photographers backing this campaign we expect this to be a popular question. You have gear, and you’re trying to figure out which Camera Cube (and perhaps Outdoor Bag) will fit it.

The answer to these types of questions is always complex, so we took it upon ourselves to create an in-depth video that shows example pack-outs for each size of cube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr7KV5c3qgc

To skip directly to the load-outs section, go to 4:40 (or copy/paste this link: https://youtu.be/Tr7KV5c3qgc?feature=shared&t=280)

By the way, the video is hosted by our chief Camera Cube designer, Rachel (aka BEV). You’ll love her.

If you’re looking for more Camera Cube specs, visit the product page on our website and check out the FEATURES / SPECS sections: https://www.peakdesign.com/products/camera-cube

What is the maximum size camera that can fit in the 2L and 7L Slings?

The 7L Sling fits an X-Small Peak Design Camera Cube, which in turn can fit a mirrorless camera body/lens, plus an extra prime lens, give-or-take. Check out this video for an example load-out of an X-Small Camera Cube: https://youtu.be/Tr7KV5c3qgc?si=N88NBXDD75imFdEL&t=316

The 2L Sling does not fit any Peak Design Camera Cubes, so if you’re carrying a camera inside it, your camera won’t have the same level of shock protection. The 2L sling can easily fit a point-and-shoot camera, but anything bigger than that likely won’t fit.

How are Outdoor Bags different than the Travel and Everyday lines?

Good question! The short answer is that Outdoor Bags are optimized for a different type of activity and use.

Our Everyday Bags and Travel Bags are both optimized for protection and durability. They are ‘structured’ meaning that they hold their shape. They have a multilayered shell that contains a layer of foam in it to protect your stuff, and their outer material, Versa Shell™, has a thick canvas-y feel to it. Everyday Bags contain FlexFold™ foam dividers, allowing them to be used as camera bags without having to insert any additional cubes/protection. Travel Bags are designed to be tossed onto baggage conveyor belts and put through whatever cruel gauntlet of torture happens after they disappear behind those rubber flaps. Both Travel and Everyday bags have a soft twill interior liner, adding additional protection (and weight).

Outdoor Bags, on the other hand, are optimized to be lightweight and comfortable. That doesn’t mean they aren’t durable—they have a lifetime guarantee after all—it just means that weight and comfort were higher up on the list of design drivers. Outdoor Bags are designed with technical, highly adjustable harnesses that are meant to distribute weight extremely effectively. These bags are meant to be worn on the trail from sun-up to sun-down. They are more comfortable and breathable. They have a sleeve for a hydration bladder with specific place to route your tube.

I have V1 Peak Design camera cubes. Will those work with the Outdoor Line?

V1 Camera Cubes are fully compatible with the 45L Outdoor Backpack, but not the 25L, and not the 7L and 2L Slings.

When we launched V2 Camera Cubes (late 2023) we introduced 2 new sizes: Smedium and X-Small. These sizes were specifically added to bring Camera Cube compatibility to the new 25L Outdoor Backpack and 7L Outdoor Sling, respectively. Originally we expected the Outdoor Bags to launch alongside the V2 Camera Cubes and Ultralight Packing Cubes, but the development cycle for the larger bags ended up taking longer.

Why didn’t we design the 25L Outdoor Backpack and 7L Sling to be backwards-compatible with V1 Camera Cubes? Well, we certainly tried to. But after multiple iterations we determined that we couldn’t support it without making some serious tradeoffs to the size, shape, and most importantly comfort and utility of the other bags. Rather than fit a square peg in a round hole, we decided to create 2 new peg shapes that fit perfectly in our new round holes. Neat.

What fits in each size of Ultralight Packing Cube?

Look, we’ll try not to be too pushy about this, but hear us out: Peak Design Ultralight Packing Cubes are the most amazingly functional and delightful way to organize dang near anything, and you will not regret buying a dozen of them, we promise you. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s answer your question.

First off, we have a video that includes details on our Ultralight Packing Cubes and what they fit, starting at 8:33. Copy and paste this link to watch it: https://youtu.be/eTkKSLRZMpU?feature=shared&t=513

When will you send Fulfillment Surveys and what is the purpose of them?

When you back this project, you choose a reward level, maybe some add-ons, then enter your credit card info, and that’s it. You don’t provide a shipping address. You don’t pick which color of bag or color/material of packing cube you want. You’ll enter that information in our fulfillment survey.

WHEN WILL I GET MY SURVEY? We plan to send our fulfillment surveys shortly after the campaign ends in October.

WHAT CAN I DO IN THE FULFILLMENT SURVEY? A whole bunch of stuff: - Provide your shipping address - Pick which color bag you want - Pick which color/material packing cube you want (if your reward level contained them) - Pick color/style for any add-ons that you selected during the campaign - Add additional items onto your reward at exclusive Kickstarter discount prices - Change which reward level you want - Pay taxes/VAT on your total order (because Kickstarter does not provide the ability to calculate/collect taxes)

Last updated: September 23, 2024 09:49

Do I have to pay taxes and shipping fees?

In short, yes.

Shipping fees are collected when you back this project. They differ across global region and in all cases the fees we collect are less than the actual cost of shipping. What’s nice is that you only pay one shipping fee for your reward—you can add on as many additional products as you’d like and your fee will not go up.

Peak Design has an an obligation to register, collect, and remit sales tax in certain USA states and countries worldwide in which certain backers are located. Taxes are not included in the pledge price but will be charged at time of checkout based on purchaser’s shipping address.

We would love to collect tax up-front just like every other online sale, but the Kickstarter platform does not have tax functionality. So instead we use a fulfillment software called BackerKit, which is capable of calculating/charging taxes based on your total order amount and shipping location. To see if taxes are collected in your region, please refer to the Peak Design webpage located at https://www.peakdesign.com/pages/faq?a=Taxes-(US-VAT-and-GST)—id–SJ1qVGLwQOWO9vxjYTUanA

Will all of my rewards and add-ons ship together or separately?

In most cases, all of your rewards and add-ons will ship together in one shipment. In rare cases, backers might receive their stuff in multiple shipments. This could be caused by a number of reasons, but the most likely one would be if one of the add-ons you ordered went temporarily out of stock in one of our warehouses. We work hard to make sure stock outages don’t happen, but with hundreds of individual SKUs across 6 warehouses, they do happen from time to time.

In the event that your shipment is split you will not be charged extra.

What is your policy on returns/refunds?

While all of our products are guaranteed for life, we do not offer refunds, returns, or exchanges on items received as Kickstarter rewards.

The support we get from our Kickstarter backers is what enables us to run and grow our business, gather customer feedback, design new products and improve existing ones. In the Kickstarter community, the items that you receive after making a pledge are referred to as ““rewards”” because they are technically not purchases in the traditional sense. Rewards are somewhere between a puchase and a gift. You pledge money in support of Peak Design, we send you new products (at a 20-25% discount) in return. In the same way that public television funds their service through the pledges of their supporters, who in turn receive gifts and continued programming, we have chosen to run and grow our business on a crowdfunded business model.

We appreciate your understanding of our policy and the support you have given us. If your reward truly offers no value to you, here are a few things that you could do in the spirit of crowdfunding…

  1. Give your reward to a friend. Our products might not work for you, but there are many folks out there who might find them very valuable. We’d love for you to share our gear with a friend of yours.

  2. Sell your reward on the PD Marketplace. Many Kickstarter rewards were purchased below the retail value – if you want to recuperate that value and possibly even more, throw your reward up on the PD Marketplace. It’s the easiest way to buy and sell used PD gear, and it has a 98% sell-through rate. Currently available in the US and Canada.

  3. Give your reward another chance. Some of our products can take some getting used to. All of our gear is designed for use in a variety of scenarios. Maybe it doesn’t work for you right now, but perhaps you’ll find the right time and place in the future.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

How do I add more bags/cubes/accessories to my reward?

You have the ability to completely customize your reward, and doing so is quite easy. When you back this campaign you start by picking a reward. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be shown a list of ‘Add-Ons.’ From there you can add anything else you want.

To get the most out of your Outdoor Backpack or Sling, we recommend adding multiple sizes/colors/materials of our Ultralight Packing Cubes. They’re incredibly functional and convenient…once you start using them, you’ll never be able to go back. If you’re a photographer or have camera gear, you’ll also want to add on a Camera Cube. Like all of our other bags, Ultralight Packing Cubes and Camera Cubes are guaranteed for life—buy em once, and use em forever.

I want to add a PD product that isn't in the Add-On list. How do I do that?

Not all Peak Design products are available in the Add-On list, just the products that we consider to be direct accessories of the new Outdoor Bags. We did this to make it easier for folks—especially new-to-PD folks—to select the right products for their needs.

If there’s a Peak Design product that you think should be added to the Add-On list, you can always suggest it either in the comments section or to [email protected]. Otherwise, the holidays are right around the corner. Peak Design holds a yearly Black Friday sale (aside from Kickstarter it’s our only sale of the year) during which you’ll be able to purchase nearly everything we make at a discount. If you want to receive updates and details on our Black Friday sale you can subscribe to our newsletter (go to peakdesign.com and scroll all the way down).

Can I use my existing External Carry Straps with the Outdoor Line?

Yes you can!

Since we launched the Travel Line in 2018 and the Everyday Line V2 in 2019, all Peak Design bags have incorporated the Cord Hook™ external carry system. All of our bags (and all of our Packing Cubes, Camera Cubes, and other Packing Tools) have small loops of cord at various points on the exterior. Our external carry straps—those that come with our Everyday Bags and Travel Bags, as well as our Packing Cube Carry Strap in the add-on section—all utilize the same proprietary flat hook hardware on the end, meaning that they are all cross-compatible with one-another.

The Cord Hook™ system seems quite simple when you’re using it—it’s a hook that goes around a cord—that’s it. But its actually quite a unique set of hardware, one that you won’t find on any other bags. We designed it to be easy to hook/unhook, while also providing a positive haptic ‘pop’ to indicate to the user that the strap is securely connected and not about to slip out. Additionally the connection had to be secure enough so they would only detach when the user applied an intentional pressure on them (and not, for instance, if the item being strapped to the bag pushed against it). Finally, the connection hardware also needed to incorporate a cinch mechanism for lashing things down. From those design drivers, and many rounds of prototyping, the Cord Hook™ system was born. Aren’t you glad you know this now?

Last updated: September 23, 2024 09:49

Is there a max weight capacity on the bags?

Backpacks are ~50 pounds. Slings are ~20 pounds.

Last updated: September 23, 2024 09:49

Do these bags have a luggage pass-thru?

There is a luggage pass-thru, just not a dedicated one. Instead of adding a luggage pass-thru strap (and thus adding material/weight to the backpacks), we opted to design our Cord Hook™ external strap system such that it can be easily configured into luggage carry strap mode. We plan to nab some photo/video of this and add it to the KS page, and we’ll probably include it in a future update as well.

Do the v1 Camera Cubes work with the new Outdoor Line?

Yes they do!

Last updated: September 23, 2024 09:49

Is the 45L Outdoor Backpack carry-on compliant?

Yes it is!

Unlike our Everyday and Travel line, the Outdoor line is unstructured—aka squishy. Even if you’ve got a Large Camera Cube in your 45L with items stuffed on top of it, you shouldn’t have a problem getting it onto an airplane (or into the ‘box-o-shame’ if the airline staff makes you prove it). All that said, there may be edge cases where your 45L exceeds carry-on limits. If every square inch of your 45L is filled to the brim with hard, non-compactable items and the rolltop is expanded to its maximum height, you may get denied. But from our real-life testing on hundreds of international flights on dozens of airlines across the globe, we’ve never encountered an issue here.

Last updated: September 23, 2024 09:49

How big of a hydration/water bladder can I fit in the Outdoor Backpacks fit?

~3L

Last updated: September 23, 2024 09:49

Why is shipping more expensive for Kickstarter rewards than it is on the Peak Design website?

The answer is two-fold:

First, the overall cost of fulfilling an entire Kickstarter campaign’s worth of orders at once is—on a per-order basis—higher than fulfilling orders from our website. While the last-mile shipping costs may be the same, the shipping costs and operational overhead to get brand new products from our factory to warehouses quickly is higher than our routine stocking shipments. Hence, Kickstarter shipping rates are a bit higher to compensate for that.

Secondly, the Kickstarter platform has limitations in how shipping rates are calculated. We can’t charge backers real-time rates, nor can we charge rates based on total order value or weight. Instead, we have to estimate what shipping costs for various combinations of items to different locations, and average it out. The shipping fee you pay is based on what reward you pick and where you live.

The good news is that on the whole we under-charge backers for shipping. Also—even more importantly—we don’t increase your shipping rate when you add on items to your reward. The more you add, the better deal you get on shipping. In fact, many backers who add on multiple items will actually be charged less on Kickstarter than they would on the Peak Design website.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
